Paul McLeod

Yesterday morning, our friend Paul McLeod passed away. He lived what some would say a tragic life, and it came to a tragic end. But he was much more than that. He was a legend of a man. He had an unbelievable passion for the things he loved and a contagious love of life itself. He will be most certainly missed.

A couple of years ago, we were at his place #GracelandToo and put together this video with our pal Chris Phelps. We never did anything with it, but now seems like a good time.

December 31, 2013

2013 was a stellar year for new records, here are our favorites!

JOSH CAMPBELL’S PICK: Local Natives – “Hummingbird”

I don’t have any divine words as to why I chose “Hummingbird”, Local Natives second album as my favorite album of 2013. It was just a really solid record that I really enjoyed this past year. Where a lot of bands fall short on sophomore releases, Local Natives did not. Their guitar work and drum parts are always unique and refreshing. Their vocal melodies and harmonies, their sort of trade mark in my opinion, are executed beautifully. I had the pleasure of seeing Local Natives live again this year at the Austin City Limits music festival, and they did what most bands cannot. They made a mid afternoon festival set amazing and engaging, and ultimately one of my favorite sets of the festival, if not the year. Good bands put out good records and put on good live shows, Local Natives did both of these things in 2013 and therefore earn my coveted album of the year nod. (I could’ve easily written very similar paragraphs about basically every band on my list, all had amazing records and I had the pleasure of seeing several of them put on amazing live shows in 2013, but I had to choose only 1)

Honorable Mentions:
Arctic Monkeys – “AM”
David Ramirez – “The Rooster EP”
HAIM – “Days Are Gone”
Jim James – “Regions Of Light And Sound Of God”
Justin Timberlake – “20/20 Experience”
Kings Of Leon – “Mechanical Bull”
The National – “Trouble Will Find Me”
O’Brother – “Disillusion”
Sigur Ros – “Kveikur”

BRANDON’S PICK: Gregory Alan Isakov – “The Weatherman”
I just couldn’t stop listening to Gregory Alan Isakov’s “The Weatherman.” There were tons of great albums that came out this year, but I just couldn’t stop listening to this one. I think the thing that I like it its simplicity. Many of the songs stick pretty close to just a guitar and voice (maybe a pinch of cello here, a dash of piano there). All in all, this album is just great to listen to. My wife and I had the pleasure of seeing him perform an intimate show during SXSW, and I think back to the beauty of that show each time I listen to a song off of “The Weatherman.”
Honorable Mentions:
in alphabetical order
Arcade Fire – “Reflektor”
Daft Punk – “Random Access Memories”
David Ramirez – “The Rooster EP”
Fleetwood Mac – “Rumours (Reissue)”
Janelle Monae – “The Electric Lady”
Joshua James – “Beware!”
The National – “Trouble Will Find Me”

JOSH RODGER’S PICK: Arctic Monkeys – “AM”

The fifth studio album by the English Indie Rockers is my favorite to date. It’s phat, sexy, fuzzy and catchy as hell. Let’s put on our leather jackets and black skinny’s, order whiskey straight and make some bad decisions.
Honorable Mentions:
City and Colour – “The Hurry and the Harm”
Joshua James – “Well, Then, I’ll Go to Hell”
The Jealous Sound – “Kill Them with Kindness” (LP reissue)

JUSTIN WISEMAN’S PICK: Stoney – “More Than Animals”

I’ve been fortunate to bear witness to the creation process of Stoney’s newest album’s “More than Animals” over the last 2 years, when I first met Stoney and filled in on keyboards for a few shows in 2011 for Stoney’s “Soar Before” EP. Though I’ve been personally disappointed it’s taken this long for this album to come to fruition (as many of the songs are at least 2 years old), the wait is completely worth it. Stoney has outdone everything he’s done in the past. His songwriting is witty, endearing, and also, at times, serious. The album includes intricate, complex production elements and creative instrumentation as well as bare bones arrangements which are just as powerful with simply an acoustic guitar and barely whispered vocals. Stoney deserves to be mentioned in the same sentence as any acclaimed albums of this year, and I strongly recommend checking it out for free at!

Honorable Mentions:
Daft Punk “Random Access Memories”
Vampire Weekend “Vampires of the Modern City”
Jim James “Regions Of Light And Sound Of God”
O’Brother “Disillusion”
Sigur Ros “Kveikur”
